Even with a dedicated live donor the process for the donation of a kidney involves multiple tests and numerous trips to Vancouver for meetings with a variety of medical specialists. In this case it has taken almost 2 years to reach this point. Darren is absolutely astounded and grateful by his nephew Matthew's donation. The day of surgery will be extensive for both of them. Transplant day will start at St. Paul's Hospital at 8 a.m. with the removal of Matthew's kidney. Darren will go into the operating room around lunch time, the transplant will take approximately 6 hours and then Darren will be in recovery for another 6 hours. His family will be pacing as he returns to his room around midnight. Darren will not have any kidneys removed, the donor kidney will be added into his groin area.
